Jared Leto looks unrecognisable as he transforms into a serial killer alongside co-star Rami Malek on the set of upcoming thriller Little Things

Jared Leto is no stranger to transforming for a role.

And the Oscar-winning actor looked unrecognisable as he transformed into a serial killer on the set of Little Things - his new action-packed thriller co-starring Denzel Washington and Rami Malek - in LA on Friday evening.

The Suicide Squad actor, 47, displayed his signature beard and greasy locks as he tapped into character while filming late in the Big Apple.

The movie will follow a deputy sheriff played by Washington, 64, who teams up with an LASD detective played by Malek, 38, to help catch a serial killer, played by Leto.

While on set, Leto is seen in an eerie photo of his role as a killer.

He had his long hair slicked back and he wore a tan longsleeve button-up that he had tucked into a pair of khaki pants.

Rami appeared deep in though as he was seen walking with a crew member as they were spotted in between shots.

Meanwhile, the Deja Vu star was photographed in a car as crew members worked around him.

For his role in the film, his character is said to have a dark past as he tries to muddle through the work ahead of him to catch the killer, according to Variety.

The film is set to be directed by John Lee Hancock who is known for his work on The Blind Side and The Highwaymen.

But while Jared may be going to a dark place for this new role, he did show his true colors last week when he donated $5,000 to a family in need as part of the #GoodThingChallenge.

The actor chose to donate to a family in Sandy, Utah whose two sons were hit by a car.

'Griffin (3) and Watson (18 months) were in a stroller when a car hit them. Watson suffered a broken neck, broken pelvis, and lacerated liver. Griffin suffered a full break skull fracture, broken clavicle, and abrasions,' Leto shared while linking the GoFundMe page.

'I encourage everyone to do the #goodthingchallenge. Remember the smallest gesture can make a big impact…even if it's just a hello and a smile,' he shared on his Twitter.
